Veterans' Memorial Square

Memorial Square Photo

The City Square in downtown Greenwood has become the area’s finest permanent memorial to the sacrifices of uniformed service men and women.  A committee which included members of the Harris-Hannah VFW Post 6527, the South Sebastian County Historical Society, Greenwood City Department heads, and concerned citizens guided the entire process.  The Committee worked with Fort Smith architect Michael LeJong of MAHG Architecture on plans for the Square which included monuments in stone with all the names of veterans that are submitted free of charge.

Funding for the project was provided by Senator Ed Wilkinson, State Representatives Steve Breedlove,  and Shirley Walters and donations from local Citizens.

Our clock tower was refurbished in 2015.  With the help of Rep. Charlotte Douglas and the WAPDD, we were able to repair the weathered structure and replace the non-functioning clock.  The clock keeps accurate time with the help of modern electronic movements and computer.

Patriots Walk Stepping Stones

As part of the Veterans’ Memorial Square, a “Patriots Walk” circles the Clock Tower and contains granite Stepping Stones each bearing the name of a veteran on whose behalf families have contributed.  Rep Douglas also assisted with releasing WAPDD funds to purchase software that assist citizens with locating individual stones and capturing the military history of our veterans.

A scenic little park on the banks of Heartsill Creek on Hwy 10 Spur (West Center Street), near the intersection of South Coker Street.  It is easily identifiable by the green Burlington Northern caboose located in the park.  There are stone benches and beautiful manicured gardens where on can pause and enjoy the sounds of Heartsill Creek gently flowing by on its Eastward journey.  We are currently working on the caboose to make it more attractive.  There are no restrooms or facilities available.
